2022 Grant Funds Awarded to Support Education:
Bank of America Charitable Foundation
Funding from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s 8th Grade Gross Science – Living Systems program for Hampton City Schools. This project provided the program as a science remediation experience, including an owl pellet dissection.
Columbia Gas of Virginia – NiSource Charitable Foundation
Funding from Columbia Gas of Virginia – NiSource Charitable Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s upcoming NASA STEM Literacy Program for Suffolk Public Schools. This project provides books and educational Standards of Learning (SOL) experiences to three title 1 elementary schools in Suffolk Public Schools.
Hampton Roads Community Foundation
Funding from Hampton Roads Community Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s STEM 360 Program & Research Project Expansion. STEM 360 is a multi-modal, ecosystem approach to enhancing STEM learning. This project brings STEM 360 to select elementary schools in Portsmouth and Norfolk.
Howmet Aerospace Foundation
Funding from the Howmet Aerospace Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s STEM 360 Program & Research Project. STEM 360 is a multi-modal, ecosystem approach to enhancing STEM learning. This project supports STEM 360 over two school years.
Langley for Families Foundation
Funding from Langley for Families supports the two recent/upcoming projects at the Virginia Air & Space Science Center: 1) the summer 2022 Family STEM Discovery program, and 2) the upcoming Cosmic Kids Book Club. Family STEM Discovery provides enriching STEM engagement activities and field trips to underserved families who live in Newport News and Hampton.
Optima Health
Funding from Optima Health supports our STEM 360 Program & Research Project Expansion in Portsmouth and Norfolk, in addition to the Science Connect Series of short videos of STEM demonstrations and fun facts posted on social media sites (Facebook and Instagram).
Robert F. Schumann Foundation
Funding from the Robert F. Schumann Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s 8th Grade Gross Science-Living Systems STEM program for Hampton City Schools. This program includes a student favorite: owl pellet dissections!
The ISTAT Foundation
Funding from The ISTAT Foundation supported two of the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s recent projects: 1) the Flight Simulators in the 2nd floor Flight Gallery; and 2) the Junior
Pilots Training area (pedal planes and the runway track) in the new early learners’ gallery: The SPACE.
Southeast Virginia Community Foundation
Funding from the Southeast Virginia Community Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s new program in development for 6th grade students called “Our Water World.” The funds received will allow us to pilot this new program for select 6th grade classes in Portsmouth Public Schools.
Virginia Space Grant Consortium
Funding from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium supports two recent projects at the Virginia Air & Space Science Center: 1) the summer 2022 Family STEM Discovery program; and 2) the 5th and 8th grade Science Reimagined Initiative for title 1 students in Suffolk and Portsmouth.
VuBay Foundation
Funding from the VuBay Foundation supports the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s two Robotics Laboratories with new technology equipment and robotics upgrades. The new equipment includes classroom sets of laptops, iPads, storage/charging carts, and drones.
