Volunteering is a blast at the Virginia Air & Space Science Center

Inspire future engineers, scientists, and astronauts, meet great people, learn about new technologies, and serve the community by joining the Virginia Air & Space Science Center’s Volunteer Program.

Docent & Volunteer Opportunities:

Docent/Tour Guide:

The Docent provides tours of the Center for groups of all ages, interpreting the Center’s artifacts and displays to illustrate concepts and ideas. Most Docent participation occurs on weekday mornings/afternoons. Some weekday evenings and weekends may also require Docent-guided tours or assistance.

Special Events Assistant:

Assists during Special Events in manning information or activity tables, decorating, and interacting with visitors during public openings and special promotions, Halloween and Christmas public events, and other featured Center activities.

Greeters:

Welcome visitors and share information regarding the Center’s features, contents, and IMAX films, and they also are frequently called upon to provide general information regarding local restaurants, historical sites, and appropriate parking facilities. Greeters are on duty most often on weekends, during holiday seasons, and throughout the summer.

Office Aide:

Volunteers may be requested to assist various Center offices (Education, Marketing and Development, Administrative, etc.) on an “as needed” basis. Tasks may require typing, filing, sorting, and mailing. At times, volunteers are called upon to assist with special promotions and other sales-related activities within the Center’s public/visitor areas.

Gallery Activities Assistant:

Gallery Assistants will help with a variety of activities throughout the facility. This will include assisting guests with exhibits, performing science demonstrations and facilitating children’s make-and-take activities. Volunteers who serve in this capacity are called upon primarily for weekends, special events, some holidays, and on certain summer season weekdays.

Summer Camp Assistant:

These are student-aged volunteers who serve as science camp assistants. The responsibilities of these volunteers, who are assigned to a camp, include helping with the daily camp set-ups, assisting the instructor by working with the individual campers throughout the day as needed, and assuring the accountability and safety of the individual campers in class, during lunch, and during all out-of-classroom activities.
